Song Of The Week: Santigold – The Keepers
Slurring like a drunk Marina Diamandis, Santigold has returned with a lovely little groove in trademark dominating style. The tribal pop jam ‘The Keepers’ has been voted this week’s Spilt Inc. Song Of The Week.
“Our house is burning down” repeats the chorus, but Santigold doesn’t seem overly concerned. In fact she’s almost showing off. The track bristles a little with anxiety, keyboard glitches bubbling in and out, but on the whole it’s a celebration, a party track. Santigold‘s been off the radar for a while but I can see why this enjoyable, rhythmic single has topped our poll this week.
Dedicated fans may dismay at the lack of aggression or abrasive bossiness, and the beat is not the heavier, thick dance timbre Santigold‘s earlier releases seemed to favour, but ‘The Keepers’ is hot, fun and teeming with a more subtle sense of attitude. It’s an alternative take on dance, a credible electro-pop number (much more credible than my vote, The Darkness with ‘Everybody Have A Good Time’). I’m going to stick ‘The Keepers’ on repeat. Go on, join me, enjoy yourself.
